The FAGE Story

FAGE (pronounced ‘fa-yeh’) has created products loved by consumers around the globe. Our story begins in 1926 with the first dairy shop in Athens, Greece, which became known for its delicious, creamy, one-of-a-kind yogurt. This dairy shop was established by the family of Athanassios Filippou, the grandfather of FAGE’s current Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.

In 1954, under the guidance of his father and FAGE founder Athanassios, Ioannis Filippou helped to create the first wholesale distribution network for yogurt in Greece. By 1964, Ioannis and his brother Kyriakos opened the company’s first yogurt production facility in Galatsi, a suburb of Athens.

Until the mid-1970s, FAGE was involved primarily in the small-scale production and distribution of traditional Greek yogurt. During that time, retail outlets typically sold yogurt as a commodity product in bulk quantities, and the consumer often was unaware of the manufacturer. However, in 1975, when the FAGE yogurt plant was relocated from Galatsi to another suburb of Athens, Metamorfosi, we were the first company to introduce branded yogurt products to the Greek market. These products, which carried the FAGE trademark, were sold in smaller, sealed tubs and presented in attractively designed packaging — very similar to the same design we use today. No one could then predict the coming success, which completely changed the yogurt market in Greece and internationally in subsequent years.

From our roots as a local Athens dairy producer, we expanded throughout Greece, as well as internationally. We began exporting yogurt to the United Kingdom in 1983, followed by Italy and many other countries. Exports to the United States started in 1998, and we continue to enjoy growth in these countries and many others, all around the world. Today, consumers can enjoy our famous Greek yogurt in over 35 different countries around the world.

FAGE has also expanded in other dairy categories and has become one of the leading Greek dairy companies. In addition to yogurt, we sell a wide range of branded dairy products, including dairy desserts, milk, cream and cheese.

In 2006, the third generation of the Filippou family took over the management of FAGE, continuing our international growth and building on our Greek heritage.

The tremendous success of our FAGE Total yogurt in the United States led to the decision to construct a yogurt production facility in Johnstown, New York, which began operations in April 2008. Today, FAGE owns and operates three production facilities in Greece (for yogurt, dairy desserts, milk, cream and cheese production) and one yogurt production plant in Johnstown, New York, which is the largest of our facilities in terms of production capacity.

FAGE is committed to continuing to grow and expand this success story working closely with customers, suppliers and investors. FAGE is a company whose name and reputation for quality are trusted by millions of consumers all over the world.
